Holger Petersen, who’s been the amiable host of CBC Radio’s Saturday Night Blues for thirty years, releases his second book of interviews for Insomniac Press. Talking Music 2: Blues and Roots Music Mavericks includes 25 in-depth conversations with a variety of roots music artists who have made significant impacts on popular music, ranging from B.B. King to Steve Miller, Wanda Jackson, Solomon Burke, Townes Van Zandt and Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers.

Canadian artists are certainly not ignored — larger-than-life personalities David Clayton-Thomas and Ronnie Hawkins describe the early days of Toronto’s pop music scene, and influential guitarists David Wilcox and Amos Garrett offer insights from their lengthy careers.

Each of the conversations is introduced by Petersen’s personal recollections of the artists he’s meeting, and the book’s foreword is contributed by Grammy-winning musicologist Rob Bowman.

Includes interviews with: B.B. King, Allen Toussaint, Bobby Charles, Zachary Richard, Billy Boy Arnold, Charlie Musselwhite, Rory Block, Sam the Sham, Ronnie Hawkins, David Clayton-Thomas, Amos Garrett/David Wilcox, James Burton/Albert Lee, Wanda Jackson, Chip Taylor, Townes Van Zandt, Tony Joe White, Dan Penn/Spooner Oldham, Solomon Burke, Dan Hicks, Steve Miller, Mose Allison, Van Dyke Parks, Bill Medley (of The Righteous Brothers), Ronnie Earl, Maddy Prior/Maggie Bell, and a foreword by Rob Bowman.

Talking Music is a collection of nineteen of Holger Petersen's in-depth radio interviews with artists — the pioneering men and women who created the blues and roots sounds that have influenced the course of popular culture and music in North America. Many of his interview subjects are no longer with us — their stories need to be told.

The book is divided into four collections of interviews: British Blues Revival, Delta and Memphis Blues, Artists Who Helped Build Stony Plain, and Bonus Tracks.

Each interview is preceded by informative background material on the artist, Petersen's own stories of their meetings, and photographs.

Now Petersen has a book out and if you're a music fan, it's a page-turner. With introductions from Petersen, these are the transcripts from 19 of the thousands of interviews he's conducted over the years. Halfway through the book, I started shaking my head at how tortuous it must have been for Petersen deciding on what to leave out.
